Recruiting Today

today I am venting. I am working on a few engineering reqs for a silicon valley start up company. Ideal candidates would have web application experience, architecture experience, java and ajax background. So, I'm calling some very well known 'big' companies. I have called into companies; doing passive recruiting for a while. I have never been hung up on in my entire career let alone 3x in 2 days. Last week, I made a few calls going after "target" candidates. I barely got my name out and introduction and they hung up on me. Candidates or what would be potential candidates, people to network with, hung up on me. I was shocked. I know they are working for large companies; companies that will soon take over the world, but the fact that they didn't say "thanks, but I'm not interested" but out right hung up was shocking. Most people usually say "thanks, but I'm not looking" and can offer at least one recommendation. I ask myself if they are that confident in the company or their ability or that their project won't be eliminated or are they just cocky? In this economy who would want to leave a stable company for the "next big project" and a start up at that. People want stability. I get that. I'm just annoyed that I encountered this a few times in one week. Argh!
